History: “Among the countless material cultural expressions of the Karajá ethnic group, the Ritxoko dolls, in addition to being an exquisite artistic work originating from the light hands of the ceramists, constitute a significant reference for the group. Made of ceramic, painted with a wide variety of graphics and representing both human forms and those of regional fauna, they are artifacts that distinguish the Karajá people from other Brazilian and South American indigenous groups.
While playing with Ritxoko or watching them being made, the Karajá girls receive important lessons about their culture and also learn the techniques and knowledge associated with their making and uses. Because they represent everyday scenes and ritual cycles, they carry and articulate systems of meaning in the Karajá culture and, in this way, are also the locus of production and communication of its values, as well as important socialization instruments for children who, playing, see themselves in these objects and learn to be Karajá.
Ritxoko are part of the collection of several museums in the country, becoming important sources of economic survival for this indigenous group. However, they must be understood beyond their purely material expression, since, since their creation, they have played an important role in the cultural reproduction of the Karajá people.” (Source: www.portal.iphan.gov.br )
The Karajá ethnic group occupies a vast region along the Araguaia and Javaé rivers and holds extensive areas in the central region of Brazil, south of the Amazon biome. There are currently 21 Karajá villages, with an estimated population of 2,900 people.
