History : The Baniwa indigenous people (read “Baniuá”) live in the Amazon, on the border of Brazil with Colombia and Venezuela, in villages located on the banks of the Içanã River and its tributaries Cuiari, Aiairi and Cubaté, in addition to communities on the banks of the Rio Negro, one of the largest rivers in the world..
The current Baniwa population is estimated at 12 thousand people, of which around 4 thousand are in Brazil, living basically on rudimentary agriculture and fishing, in approximately one hundred villages and farms. They developed a fine adaptation to a region with low support capacity, that is, with acidic and poor soils, with discontinuous patches of terra firma.
They are excellent at making baskets using the stem of the arumã (an herbaceous plant), vines, dyes and natural fixatives. Basketry is rich in graphics, and this ancient art has been passed down through generations.
