Origin : Assurini ethnic group - Amazon (Brazil)

History : The Assurini People lived isolated in the dense forests of central Brazil until 1971, when the first contacts were made with Brazilian indigenous people. After this first contact, the Assurini of Xingú - whose name was given by the attraction fronts - suffered a drastic population decline, caused mainly by diseases against which the Assurini had no natural defenses in their bodies. However, the imminent danger of their physical extinction has always contrasted with an extreme cultural vitality, manifested in the performance of extensive rituals, shamanic practices and an elaborate system of graphic art.

According to information collected from the Assurini themselves and estimates made by anthropologist Berta Ribeiro (1982), the indigenous group numbered 150 individuals around 1930. From this time until the year of contact (1971), many Assurini were killed in clashes with the Kayapó or the Araweté, when women and children were also kidnapped.

After contact with the attraction fronts, the Asurini population of Xingu decreased by almost 50% until 1982, mainly due to the effects of new diseases transmitted by white people due to the lack of preparation of these fronts. In 1971, the population had approximately 100 individuals and, in 1982, it reached 52. In 1992, there were 66 Asurini and, in 1994, this number rose to 72. In 2002, the Asurini population was made up of 33 women, 18 men and 55 young people and children, for a total of 106 individuals. To a large extent, this demographic recovery is due to the increase in the child population and, consequently, the change in the pattern of family composition, together with interethnic marriages.
