The new edition of Indigenous Banks of Brazil brings precious photographic documentation from the collection of the BEI Collection of Indigenous Banks, along with texts that address the topic from various aspects – cultural, practical and aesthetic. The book also contains a map that locates the ethnicities present in the collection and a beautiful photographic essay by Rafael Costa carried out in Xingu.
Created twenty years ago, the Collection today has more than 900 pieces, from 45 ethnicities. Exhibited in museums and art spaces in Brazil and abroad, it has contributed to the recognition of the central role of indigenous art in the Brazilian art panorama, consolidating itself as a space for dialogue and exchange with original peoples.
The work features texts by educator and writer Ariabo Kezo, from the Balatiponé ethnic group, by professor Adonias Guiome Ioiô, of Palikur origin, and by activist and writer of Tariana origin Ismael Pedrosa Moreira, in addition to a narrative told by Yumuin Mehinaku about the mythical origin of banks intended for chiefs. The volume is completed by contributions from curator Mariana Brazão, botanist Ricardo Cardim and photographer Renato Soares.
The book explains how the narratives of each people are translated into graphics that represent animals and geometric shapes and always keeps the authorship of the pieces in the foreground, showing that each artist imprints their language on collective techniques. The edition is trilingual (Portuguese, English and French).
