History : The Maracá is one of the best-known indigenous musical instruments, and its name is often used as a generic designation for rattles. It consists of a dry, hollow gourd with small stones, lumps or seeds inside, placed at the end of a stick, usually made of wood. Among the most diverse indigenous populations, the maraca is generally used to set the rhythm of singing and dancing during ceremonies, festivities, rites and other cultural and social manifestations.

There are ethnic groups that believe that maraca has great spiritual power. Considered a noble object, it is also used by shamans in religious ceremonies and rituals. Some communities, for example, believe that spirits speak through maracas. The artifact's supernatural power is due not only to the mysterious sound produced by the grains and stones contained within, but also to the paintings and engravings that adorn the sound instrument. The Tikuna are the most numerous indigenous people in the Brazilian Amazon. With a history marked by the violent entry of rubber tappers, fishermen and loggers into the Solimões River region, it was only in the 1990s that the Tikuna achieved official recognition of the majority of their lands. Today they face the challenge of ensuring their economic and environmental sustainability, as well as improving relations with the surrounding society while keeping their rich culture alive. It is no coincidence that the crafts, drawings and paintings of these people gained international attention.
