Origin: Northeast of Brazil (State of Paraíba)

History: Master Bento de Sumé (Sumé is a city in the State of Paraíba, in the center of Northeastern Brazil) began producing art with wood while he was still living and working in São Paulo, where he moved in the early 1980s seeking to improve conditions financial resources, the destination of many northeasterners fleeing the drought and lack of opportunities at the time.

After suffering an accident and being unable to work in his old profession, he decided to return to his homeland and began making small wooden sculptures as a hobby. The first was a “low-necked giraffe”, which he still keeps today as a souvenir, as at the time I didn’t even know that giraffes had long, upward necks.

Little by little he discovered his vocation, and today his sculptures of birds and sacred images made from Umburana wood are recognized throughout Brazil. For birds, he takes inspiration from his flying friends, who visit him daily in his backyard. Its colors are bright and vibrant and the shapes are given by the wood that you find on your visits to the Sertão of your region.

Note : Because they are produced by hand, each piece is unique, with no two being exactly the same.
